New site

For anyone who doesn't know already, I have my own website now, and my blog is running on it as well. I'll still keep this account, but I'm probably not going to update it much more. The new website is at hgomez.org. I already have all of the entries copied over, none of the comments made it however. See you all at my new site!.. well, I won't actually SEE you... but, i'll see your comments... well.. hopefully.... /me walks away embarrassed slightly

update time!

Well, the blonde has done it again! This weekend, I've managed to hurt myself 3 times. 2 burns on my right hand, and scraped up my right forearm. The physics test friday went pretty well - I managed to pull an 82 out of it, and I am passing all of my classes that have posted midterms (the digital logic design class with the TA from hell has me kind of worried...) The rest of the week went as well as it could have with classes and such. I put off the co-op stuff again, even though I need to get it in NOW. I'm just a bit uneasy with getting ready to give up 2 years or so, you know?

My Dad came back form Hawaii on business this weekend. Said that he wasn't too impressed with it, as it was filled with rude japanese people, high prices, too many tourists, etc. Then again, he probably didn't like it as he was on there for business and got really sick. :/

Saturday night, Brim had his little brother stay a little bit, so we had a wee-LAN (like a mini-lan, but smaller) there with Greg, and Brim's little brother. Linz made an appearance and Kat made spaghetti and doctored me up abit whenever I burned myself slightly there. :P I'm referring to her as "mommy kat" more and more now-a-days. :P

Friday night, Jules, Cherry, and Mogorman had an apartment welcoming party type of thing. Most of the IRC channel showed up and had a good time. I kind of went anti-social halfway through it though, and left early. The time I was there was alot of fun though - just hanging with my family away from family.

And just so everyone knows the scratches were when I tried to climb a tree that wasn't very climbable on Thursday night.

We had a concert for wind ensemble today. It sucked really bad. At one point, it completely crashed and we had to stop and restart part of a song... Embarrassing really.

I probably need to do my homework soon, but I'm gonna put it off a bit longer. Night all!

Updates and Insomnia

Can't sleep. I know I should be as I have a digital logic lab in 4 hours from now... It's gonna SUCK... Anyways, as I couldn't get any sleep, I figured that I'd do a quick update.

Co-op and jobs
Went to the meeting, got stuff looked at, got the smiley face for that. Need to turn in some copies of my resume and coverletter, a form or two (I think...) and then I'm good to go! I was also going to apply for the summer hire position just in case shit hits the fan this summer.

House
Doesn't look like that there are many 4 bedroom houses up for grabs right about now. 2 2 bedroom apartments are looking all the more promising though...

Sickness
Feelin' almost up to par again, but still a little bit of coughing and sneezing and sniffling. A couple of friends have been sick lately, as well as my Dad who is in Hawaii right now on a business trip. Haven't heard from him, but hope things are going well over there between being sick, trying to enjoy it, and work.

Classes
Test in physics this Friday, and I am still a bit fuzzy on some of the chapters - and by fuzzy, I mean clueless. I feel as if there's going to be a midterm or something important comming up soon for digital logic design but my TA has yet to freakin' mention anything about it, so no clue. :/

Friends
Getting closer to some people, other people it seems I talk to less each day. Three friends of mine moved into an apartment near the narro.ws, and plan to have a "housewarming" party ("house" as it's really an apartment :P). I would have helped them move in this past weekend, but I got sick. Sorry I couldn't help out!

New Stuff
Webcam. Yes, I sat around today and fiddled with it and I think I got it running how I like it to. Only thing that I can see causing problems is if CNS doesn't like me making 2 FTP connections to their email/webserver a minute and transfering about 30 KB/minute. I've looked and the only thing that I think that they can get me on is that I'm running a server of sorts, BUT I'm not the server. I am giving a small file to their webserver open to everyone with a UAH email address and then pointing a couple of people towards it. BTW, I plan on turning the webcam off when I'm sleeping or not there for long periods of time, and it is set to update every 30 seconds, and finally, it can be found here. Funny story really, originally, the webcam in my room was only going to be a proof of concept and nothing more. I got the thoguht to re-format a roommates extra machine that had absolutely nothing to do, and use it out in the common area as the webcam. I could easily get pictures transfered from it to my main machine, but was having problems getting my main machine to upload to the FTP website onto the internet. I finally gave up after 3 hours of messing with it or so, and it's now sitting in my room, ontop of my tower, next to the pirate ship. Changing topics, Gaz is overfilling... again... I really need to go by one of these days and pull everything off of it, as I have something queued up which is set to take up ~75% of the hard drive... again...

And the weekend was going so good...

This weekend started out awesome - I went to the hockey game on friday evening after actually doing most of my homework in physics (as opposed to finding someone who just got the equations). It'd been close to 5 to 6 years since I've seen a hockey game and I had a blast. I ended up sitting with the Delta Chi's for the game. Some people may not think much of them, but they all seemed really cool and they were really into the game which just made it that much more fun.

I had planning ong going to the game on Saturday, but something un-expected happen - my immune system went stupid and I got sick. Ended up sleeping in till 7 or so until I wanted food, and seeing as I had soeveral packs of oatmeal, and 1 pack of ramen, I needed to make a walmart run. I now do have some soup, but still haven't made it yet.

Not sure if I'm gonna be able to run over to the parent's house later today as the whole sick-thing doesn't seem to be passing without a fight. I'd feel bad if I didn't go, but then again, if I'm sick, not much I can do about that. :/

Been trying to get plenty of sleep, but I think I've had too much sleep, so I can't go back to sleep.

update time!

Yeah. Monday really sucked. Tuesday was better, but not that great either. Wednesday and today and tomarrow seem like they are going to be the norm of classes, and some homework.

I've kind of been ranting about women alot lately - it is hitting again, and I'm not really sure what is starting it up again. I'm not gonna go into it here, but i figured i'd mention it.

I got an email and went by the co-op office and am elligable to co-op. I'm happy about that as I have a decent chance getting a job with one company, let alone if I get an interview from other places. I'm pretty confident that I can get a summer job - now I just need to find a place to live during the summer. No news on houses, so I'm almost going to just assume that we're not going to find a 4 bedroom house. Not sure whats going to happen with that though. :/

I think this is one of the first weekends in a while that I actually don't have anything planned. I'm not sure really what to think, as I know I'm gonna enjoy sleeping in, BUT at the same time, I know that I'm just going to end up getting down because I have nothing to do... I know, it's weird, but oh well...

Oh, whats the worst day of the week that gets us all depressed?
m-o-n, d-a-y, s-u-c-k-s!

That song describes my day today. Wen to sleep clost to 5 or so, woke up at 9:30 as i always do, went to ethics (boring), ate some lunch, worked on my co-op cover letter (probably sucks), went to co-op orientation, went to physics (am understanding less and less as the days go on), jazz band (sucked ass), went to physics lab for a midterm (pwned that thing like no tomarrow), physics homework (didn't finish it all the way, as I understand that less than the class), tried to get some break in there, and then worked on my digital logic design lab report... all in all, a definate kill me day... And now, I need to get some sleep before my 8 am lab in the morning. D: I took some pics and this is what little sleep and lots of work will do you in one day:

women suck

Well, this is a wonderful day.... </sarcasm>. Woke up late (+5), went to dad's house and cleaned Gaz up a bit (+1), overheard my step-mom going on about work and stuff, got some more pressure put on me by my dad, and got shoved abit off to the side when I was trying to do something nice (-3). Anti-valentine's party cancelled (-1), one of my best friends getting mad at me on the 'net (-5). Went to a frat party (+1), saw some people I knew (+1), and obviously failed to attract any female attention at it (-5), came back, smelled like smoke (-1), got it mentioned to me multiple times (-3), had the same friend attack me again (-5). If the windows calculator knows how to add, and I know how to press buttons like a monkey, then that comes down to a score of -15. Go me!

long story short - I suck at life...

what's the point in having friends if they are only going to hurt you?

Wee!

What a day. After the awesome moment yesterday, I felt like something was missing in my life lately. Something... After thinking about it, it hit me. PANCAKES! What better place around Huntsville to get pancakes at 11 am and that gives a UAH student discount than IHOP!? Anyways, mentioned it in IRC, and it caught fire instantly. Not many of us have been to IHOP as a group in a while. Within an hour of mentioning it, 14 of us were there, the Jameses, SeVeN, Julie, Monochrome, I-MOD/Opticron, Cherry, Mogorman, linz, Chazz, Gregabyte, Brimstone, Kat, and I. Craziness followed, and I wish i had brought my camera, but didn't. Anywas, towards the end, the 4th floor of NCRH decided to come as well (complete coincidence) and we had a UAH corner from what I could understand. :) The waitress did suck though. Granted, a couple of us overtipped her, and she was slow with everything (granted: it was a lot of food, but there were other people there that could have helped her) and she maybe only refilled drinks like 3 times... Not great performance... I miss our waitress that we normally had! She ruled. The IRC guys know who I'm talking about!

After I got back from that, the roommates decided to go out and walk around. I wanted to try playing with the exposure time on my camera, so I went ahead and brought it. Pics are at this website. This may become a common thing for me and I may keep taking more night shots like those later on! :D

Classes today were OK, got most of my homework done, emailed my old boss about a co-op job starting the summer (may or may not happen. if no co-op, i'll just sign back up as a summer hire :D... Hopefully at least). Classes are wearing me out, and I'm ready for spring break!!!

Ever have one of those days?

Have you ever had one of those days where you were just walking back from class, the weather was just right, sky was as nice as it had been all day, and then you look up, and something happens: you realize the small things that make life worth living, things just fall into place at that one moment and you realize that you are extremely lucky to made it as far as you have so far, and the only place you can go up. I don't think there was any real reason behind it today, but I'm glad it happened. I can't remember the last time if i've ever had one of these moments. It really makes you self confident, that you can do anything you want, and brings you up on EVERY level at once. Maybe those 100 seconds, I had no stress and no worries at all and was happy in one of the first times in a while. To everyone that doesn't ever leave their rooms or are too busy with homework or something, take a walk - look around you, appreciate the little things that you have in your life, and that you are incredibly lucky to have come as far as you have. Have a nice day everyone!!

tentative subject title

Craziness been goin on... Friday, had 2 tests: ethics and physics. Ethics - I was asked to explain perspectivism... thats about all i konw of perspectivism... I think I managed to BS it enough so that it made some sense though. :D The other test was in physics, and I manged to pull a 76 out of it. Not the greatest of grades, but it will work. :)

At the mall today, I started thinking, and finally convinced myself that I do need new t-shirts... They still fit and whatnot, but I think I'm past my obsession with Adidas T-shirts... as I was jokingly known as the Adidas Poster Boy by a couple of people back in 7th grade. :( I just need to get some moneys around so I can actually afford to get more than 2 shirts.

The latest exponent (school paper) had something in it that made me pissed off - some woman complaining about how there are no good guys here on campus. What's more, the woman that she asked said that they are already taken... OK, so I'm less of a guy for reading that part of the paper... :/ ANYWAYS, I'm REALLY thinkging of just sending an email saying "yes, there are good guys out there, but we are just too shy to talk to complete strangers, and don't go to many social events." and try to get those crazy women straightened out. I'm normally not one for saying that I'm great and all, but in this case, I like to disagree. I may not be that great, but I'm better than a bunch of guys who DO have girlfriends...

Been playing around with Pig the past couple of days. I've managed to get videos converted to a small WMV, and play well on it. Then again, it can play AVIs encoded in DivX, and XviD, but those are a bit large of files to be putting on a small storage space. I also managed to get to play OLD scumm games like full throttle, and sam n max! another way to kill time!

Tomarrow is Sunday, and Kat and I have a jazz band concert. Hopefully, it will all go well, and will be a lot of fun!

Yesterday 2 of my really good friends had a joint birthday party. Great time... Anyways, pics are here. Enjoy!!!

What's in your pocket?

The other day I realized that I am finally the epitime of a geek. I carry a lot of crap in my pockets that proves it. This is always what are in pockets now.

Cell phone - What was once an expensive, bulky, car phone is now a fashion statement. I normally don't use it, except to tell the time :)
PDA - Thanks again to chazz for this awesome PDA! Memory upgrades for it is a 256 meg compact flash card and a 1 gig SD card.
Keys - necessity, but what isn't is a 128 meg thumbdrive, complete with 2 ip scanning programs, an FTP program, a media player, an internet downloader, an irc client, and an SSH program on it. :P
Wallet - just the basics. ID's debit card, old receipts, etc.

Basically, what is in YOUR pockets?

Labs SUCK

I stayed up until 2:30 last night working on physics homework (DAMN YOU PHYSICS!) and working on my co-op application n stuff. I wasn't able to get it done, so I rescheduled the appointment.

The other day, I remembered that my dad and stepmom got new ipaqs... so what are they doing with their old ones? they wre just sitting there... hmm... I added one of them to my army of obsolence, and found something interesting - windows media player didn't want to play much of the files that I put on the compact flash card that i also got. However, if I found the .pls (playlist) file, and put it on my main machine, and modified it to FORCE it to use the songs on the card, it worked fine... I was about to write a C++ program to handle all of that BS for me, but Chazz offered me his Dell Axim x50 he had just sitting around. As that is better on every level, AND can read SD cards, I am lovin' it! THANKS CHAZZ!!!!

Two of my friends are trying to learn different languages now. I tried learning french for a little bit, and japanese for about 3 weeks, but I just didn't have the motivation to keep up with the stuff.

I haven't had much sleep, and I should be studying/napping in preperation for a digital logic design test in 2 hours, but instead, here I am slaving away for you all. Oh, the sacrifices I make for my audience!

Sat, Feb. 4th, 2006, 02:21 pm
weekend!!

Finally happened - the weekend arrived! This next week is looking to be fairly stressful as well as the past 2 have been. co-op orientation on tuesday, as well as a digital logic design test, and on friday - a test in physics, and a test in ethics. :( BUT, party later on that day! :) The 12th is the jazz band's concert. Hopefully, it all goes well.

The house - yeah, probably not going to be getting that one as it isn't going to be on the market in 2 months. :( There were some things that I didn't like about it, such as it claimed to be 4 bedrooms, but 2 of the bedrooms were about the size of our dorm rooms. ugh... Something may have to give.... I'm not sure right now.

Went to the Nun last night. Depression hit in full force though, so I didn't have that great of a time. :(

As it's the weekend, I'm planning on just sleeping, eating, and not doing anything. Hopefully, some fun and good stuff will happen to me in a bit...

Tue, Jan. 31st, 2006, 11:30 am
ugh....

Well, here I am. Sitting in the engineering building's computer lab writing a new post. "Why," I am going to assume you say, "are you sitting in the computer lab Gomez? That damn ee201 lab... I spent close to an hour trying to understand what the hell my foreign TA was saying, as well as keeping up with the different systems of notation (A and A' - "A" and "not A" or A and A with a bar over it - "A" and "A Bar,". Same subject, different notation. It of course doesn't stop there! Ask anyone, and you get the same variables, but completely different subjects! AHGHHH!!.. moving on..). Finally, after I figured out WHAT I was supposed to be doing, I got it all goin' fairly easily. Now time to BUILD the circuit using gate chips and stuff on the breadboards. OK, now I've taken electronics in High School, and we BARELY used breadbords in there. So, I of course was a bit unsure of the wiring of things like the grounds, and the leads. For reference, you just daisy chain 'em together or something like that. The first two were pretty freakin' simple, and one of them took ~5 minutes to do from scratch. No problems! Then came the evil one. 4 chips FILLED with multiple wires on each breadboard connection. First time around, I got about halfway then realized that I'm an idiot, and instead of taking the time to go back and do it all over again, I just started over. I finished it with like 2 minutes to go. Power it on and .... nothing... CRAP!!! So, with no more time left, I just let it go, unplugged everything, and put everything back... Now, I'm cranky, a failure, AND tired! What a way to start the week...

Sun, Jan. 29th, 2006, 08:32 pm
update time!

It's the weekend, and I have a headache. You know what that means: IT'S TIME FOR AN UPDATE!

Friday was a friend's birthday surpise party - pics are up here. I think she enjoyed it. Me and the roommates also went out to take a quick look at a house we might be renting out for a while, but depending on stuff inside (washer/dryer, refrigarator, etc), we may or may not look into it more... No idea what's gonna happen, but I called the realestate lady, and hopefully she can give us some more info. :/

Sat - slept in till 2:30. I don't think I've needed sleep like that in quite some time. This past weekend was just a trainwreck, with my moods/emotions, and classes. It wasn't very pretty, and here's hoping that this next week is better!

Today (sunday for all you weirdos out there :P), Greg, Brim, Kat and I all went outside to throw a frisbee around for a while. Seeing as that was basically my first time throwin a frisbee around, I thought I did OK... for a yankee...

Anyways, laundry is done, so I'm off to get that.

Update time!

Yeah... Sorry bout that last post there. :P Things the other week just kept piling up, and piling up... And finally, it crashed... hard. Things lately have been better, but still not that wonderful. :-/ I've been trying to keep helping people and stuff, but I'm getting the feeling that sometimes I'm doing more harm than good. Again - a reason why I'm thinking of just shutting up about stuff, and just saying "Gomeznasai" and going about my merry way. But that wouldn't be very nice of me...

After an uptime of close to a week and a half, my comp BSOD'ed on me... Normally, it wouldn't bother me, but it's been having a rough time booting after a BSOD, and I have to mess with it a bit to get it back up - including unplugging the ethernet cables (it tries to boot over the network for some reason), messing with the power cables on the hard drives (I think it tries to boot from one of them instead), unplugging the power cable, and restarts (as it tries to boot, and can't find a bootable hard drive)... I think the MBR might be a bit flaky, and I'm needing to do a reformat and reinstall soon, but I just haven't gotten the time lately to do it. It's been close to a year since the last re-install, so as I said, it's getting to that point. :-/

I think I've finally gotten into habit of doing 25 pushups before I go to sleep. Hey, I know it's not much, but they keep getting easier and easier, and it's better than not doin' any!

I've been enjoying Jazz band more and more, and the one song that I like the most, is probably the eaisiest, but I enjoy it probably because of the cool sound. It's the only piece of music that I've played in 2 years that makes me do some singing (it's backgroung, and for effect), but I can't help it - It just sounds cool! If anyone wants to check it out, there's gonna be a concert on Feb. 12th @ 3:00 pm at the recital hall in Robert's Hall on campus. Not sure about price, but you'd get a chance to see everyone's favorite cable jew in action on the 'bone! :D

Cal B is kicking my ass lately. I'm struggling to get some of the concepts, but I think I'm starting to get it. Damn you Isaac Newton!!

Mon, Jan. 23rd, 2006, 01:09 am
shit's hit the fan

the subject says the Cliff's Notes. If you are clueless, believe me it's better that you don't know why, and NO, I will not explain it.

My mood this weekend has been a roller coaster, including some of the highest highs possible, as well as an absolute de-railment complete with decapitations, people losing control of their bowels, and limbs flying off, sputtering blood all over the place as innocent bystandards are killed as the car crashes into the ferris wheel and no one survives. Things are not good by far, BUT I will feel better about things eventually.

Sun, Jan. 22nd, 2006, 07:10 pm
happiness - a lesson or a trait...

The whole concept behind yin and yang is that with good, theres an equal ammount of bad, and vice versa. This thought popped into my mind not too long ago - Which is better? to "walk the line" of the two extremes, and neither do good, nor evil, therefore by the concept's logic, suffer no evil at the cost of no good? After thinking about this for several minutes, another random idea: how do we know what makes us happy in the first place? Is it something that we subconciously learn in life, or is it one of those things which happens genetically?

Say you have 2 kids - one that is locked in a room, with no outside contact, the same meal, etc, and another with a much more dynamic lifestyle. Which one would you say would be happier? The dynamic kid? But if that's your case, then how do you know that? He's had some really good times, but he's also had some really bad times? Does he tend to linger on the bad, so that his entire outlook on life gets drug down into the gutters. How about that kid in the room? Nothing has changed in his life, and things are the same. Who has it better?

hoorays for the weekend

Well, things have gotten a bit crazy lately, but they are still going well. I've been trying to keep up with friends, homework, AND sleep. So far, it's turning into one of those "good, fast, and cheap: pick two" things right now, but I think I'm juggling it well so far.

I'm finding all the more obvious that I want to be more social than my roommates, which is odd, seeing as when we moved into CCRH last year, I was probably the least social.

The other day, I spent at least 2 hours on some homework for my digital logic design lab class... Yesterday (after the due time as well) I got an email from my TA saying that I've done the right problems... but in the wrong book... ... seriously... thankfully, she's letting me turn it in before noon on monday, so that isn't too bad, but it still sucked.

I'm not sure if I'm comming of as being depressing and completely lonely in my posts, but for the most part, I'm OK. I occasionally get the whole depression and lonely thing set in, but it happens maybe once a week or so. Things on the whole are goin' good, and I think things will be OK.

A couple posts back, I thought of just saying "to hell with helping friends," but I've gotten past that, and am going to keep helping people out.

Well, that will cover this post, so that's that!

Thu, Jan. 19th, 2006, 04:27 am

Well, I HAD an emo-tastic post ready to go. Thankfully, a good friend helped me out of it. :) Thanks a bunch! Anyways, back to stuff I was planning on posting a while ago!

Lately, I've been changing up my sleeping wear. It's currently at the boxers, and a black t-shirt. Now, I don't know about what you think, but there is just something about a black t-shirt. It's like when I wear it, I'm saying "hey... don't mess w/ me... I have a black t-shirt on..." and I think that it just CAN'T get much better or badass than that...

I thought of a new way of encoding movies... Seeing as I'd be presented with smile and nods, I'm not gonna get into it here. I already learned my lesson once. :P I am planning on messing around w/ it next time I do a movie rip, and when I have plenty of free time, as it will take quite a long time to get it working right. :P

I was laying in bed the other night, and I got to thinking. Which is more important: food or sleep? I think I'm leaning towards sleep. If I remember right, somewhere it said you can live about a week w/out food, and if you are eating all the time and then not sleeping, you are just going to go crazy. Don't believe me? Go see the Machinist. Messed up movie, but really good stuff.

With valentine's day comming up in a month, I'm expecting the whole, "all I want is to find a nice, sweet, caring guy!" line from some of my female friends who still believe that. I find that INCREDIBLY hard to belive, as 4/5 of the time, they KNOW a guy who is just that. But why not him? "Oh, well, I want someone LIKE him, but not him." Wow... Then after that whole lie to themselves, they will find the first guy who asks them out with an IQ over 70 and date him. Months down the road, the nice guy who is still single will have to help make the girl feel better about everything, and how she should just dump him for cheating on her, and she will still date someone like the asshole, just because the fact that most women will not give the guy off in the corner a shot. Normally, your average geek is all you are looking for in a guy. Long story short - give the geeks a shot!

and thats my rant! you stay classy!
